The History of Hitachi Telecom (USA), Inc.

Over 30 Years of Excellence and Innovation

The Story Behind Hitachi Telecom

In the early 1970s, Hitachi entered the U.S. telecommunications market with the introduction of a crossbar PBX product. Subsequent development led to a family of digital PBXs that led the market for lodging industry telecommunications systems.

North American R&D capability was added in 1980, and Hitachi Telecom (USA) Inc. was incorporated 1987 as an expansion of the North American product development operation.

In the late 1990s, Hitachi introduced the AMN5192 SONET product line, followed by the AMN6100 DWDM system, the AMN4100 Transmux, and the AMN7100 Lambda Terminal products. These products established Hitachi as a leader in ultra long haul, 10Gbps optical transmission in North America. Hitachi continues to build on these successes, and is currently developing 40Gbps and 100Gbps optical transport solutions.

Hitachi entered the optical access arena in 2003, with PON (Broadband Passive Optical Network) solutions. The company was one of the first vendors to offer PON technology, with the first products introduced in the mid-1990s. Hitachi deployed optical access to more then 800,000 subscribers in Japan beginning in 2002. Today, the company’s GPON (Gigabit PON) system is deployed in multiple communities in the United States.

Recognizing that our customers operate in very competitive environments, Hitachi offers Source-to-Subscriber solutions, which bundle services and applications with the GPON product to allow our customers to enjoy faster time-to-market and to realize ROI objectives more quickly.
