Hitachi provides PON for City of Dover, Ohio

-- Hitachi's Access products and PON expertise aid Dover in offering data services to businesses utilizing the city's complete fiber optic network --

CHICAGO, IL, June 21, 2004 – Hitachi, Ltd., and Hitachi Telecom (USA), Inc. have been selected by the City of Dover, Ohio to deploy the AMN1200 suite of leading PON (Passive Optical Network) technology to maximize the capabilities of the city’s existing fiber optic network. Equipment was installed during the last week of March providing high-bandwidth data services to several businesses.

Dover, located 80 miles south of Cleveland, has been at the forefront among cities in the state in realizing the benefits of building a fiber optic network to serve businesses in the community. After completing the fiber optic network in 2003, Dover studied the market, evaluating fiber optic equipment vendors to identify the best match for the project. “Hitachi stood out as a company with a solid reputation for quality and outstanding support. With their 14 years of experience in optical and PON technology, it became apparent that we wanted to work together to learn and make this venture a success,” said Mayor Richard Homrighausen.

The first deployment involved the installation of Hitachi’s AMN1200 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in the network operations center located within the Dover City Hall. Fiber optic cable connects the OLT to Ethernet Terminal Units (ETUs) located on individual business premises to deliver high-bandwidth data services. Dover is studying the opportunity to expand the service to residents of Dover as well. For residential applications, Hitachi’s AMN1200 Single Family Unit (SFU), installed on the exterior of each participating home, will allow residents to get data, voice and video services over the fiber optic network. Overall, the city of Dover will offer increased quality and services to its citizens, maximize the utilization of its existing network and attract economic development by providing a superior telecommunications infrastructure.

“Hitachi is pleased to be working with the City of Dover to deploy a state-of-the-art optical network,” says Frank Banks, VP of Sales, Hitachi Telecom (USA) Inc. “Our experience in PON and dedication to customer service will prove positive and should benefit the city and its citizens and businesses.”
